I like to be prepared for everything. I makes lists all the time. I think and rethink everything over and over again. Sometimes to the point of nauseum. I am always on time. Truth be told, I am always early so that I am on time. I almost always do what I say I am going to do.
Recently I have discovered that I am more. I am a creative as well. SIGH. This has been a very difficult period of growth in my life. I am used to planning but being a creative sometimes means you need to be open to spontaneity. When an idea presents itself and I want to move forward, the analytical side says hold on a minute. You need to fully think this through so you’re not wasting time and money. What is the point of this idea you have? What are you going to do with it? And the creative very meekly responds with, I want to do this because I need to be free.
Understanding who the left is separate from who the right is, allows for them to collectively be happy and productive.
Creative people are less structured, less predictable. They sometimes get lost in their own imaginations. They are dreamers. Being free of time and space allows them to be completely open to their artistry.
Analytical people possess the ability to visualize, articulate, conceptualize or solve both complex and uncomplicated problems. They make decisions that appear to be sensible. Analytical people can be perceived as boring or party poppers when in reality they keep the order. They keep things on track. They keep the creatives from going broke.
I actually think that I have the best of both worlds. The trick is knowing how and when to tap in to one or the other. They both need to be fed to flourish.
I try to think about the needs of each side and engage myself in activities that stimulate.
Here are a few of my tips.
- take on challenges outside of your comfort zone
- laugh some more
